2024 FSY Asia Conference: "I Am a Disciple of Jesus Christ"

From December 16-20, 2024, the For the Strength of Youth (FSY) international conference in Thailand marked the first area-wide FSY for the Asia Area. Organized by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this event aimed to unite youth from across the region in one place for a transformative week of faith, fun, and spiritual growth.

Why FSY: A Gathering for Expat Families

The international conference addressed the unique challenges faced by young men and young women whose primary language is English, but are living in countries where English is not a primary language. These youth often find themselves isolated in non-English-speaking environments, making it difficult for them to connect with peers. This FSY offered a safe and inclusive space for them to interact, share testimonies, and build lasting friendships.

"This camp was my first actual English camp, so I was able to understand everything and talk with more people," said Zechariah Olson, a youth participant from Bangkok. "It felt amazing to meet others my age who share my faith. For the first time, I didn’t feel alone."

Participants from Across the Asia Area

The Asia Area FSY welcomed 160 participants from various locations: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Chengdu, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. The youth, ages 14–18, were selected based on their language needs, bishop’s recommendation, and adherence to the standards of the Church. The conference provided them with the opportunity to meet peers who share the same beliefs and build lasting friendships.

"The best part about FSY was meeting new people and seeing how many others share my beliefs," said Brigette Cruz from China. "I now feel more loved by Christ and inspired by those around me. It’s an experience I’ll never forget."

Highlights from the Week

FSY was a week filled with dancing, games, a service project, and heartfelt testimony meetings. Behind the scenes, Young Single Adult (YSA) leaders made it all happen. Coordinators kept things running smoothly, assistant coordinators supported counselors, and counselors worked directly with youth, guiding them through activities and workshops with care and enthusiasm.

"FSY was a perfect opportunity to relive the joy of serving others," said Pamela Donato, an assistant coordinator. "Being surrounded by the youth reminded me of the power of simple testimonies and how they can inspire profound growth."

The conference featured a perfect mix of high-energy activities and spiritual moments. Participants attended workshops and devotionals exploring gospel principles, set personal goals, and reflected on their discipleship of Jesus Christ. Laughter echoed during team-building games and challenges, and many considered the Dance Night the ultimate icebreaker, where friendships were forged on the dance floor.

"FSY was better than I imagined. The gospel study sessions helped me focus deeply and feel peace," said Christa Li from Malaysia. "This experience has inspired me to prioritize my gospel studies and live with more purpose."

"I think my favorite part about FSY is just meeting so many new people from different countries. Everyone comes with unique talents and perspectives, and it’s inspiring," said Fernando Yu  from Hong Kong. "The testimony meetings were especially spiritual and helped me gain more confidence in my beliefs."

"Well, I hope they treasure the relationships they build here at the camp," shared Sister Tai. "This is just the beginning stage, and I hope that when they feel lonely, they can recall the moments and experiences they had here, remembering those feelings to move forward with faith and courage."

A Life-Changing Experience

"This camp is a blessing," said Ruby Sylvester from Malaysia. "I’ve learned more about the Book of Mormon, made amazing friends, and strengthened my testimony of Joseph Smith and God’s miracles."

"The best part was seeing how inclusive everyone was," shared Jake Giauque, a counselor. "Even those who were shy at first found themselves participating and connecting by the end of the week."

"FSY is more than just a camp; it’s a place where testimonies are born and strengthened," said Tizzy Parks, one of the coordinators. "I’ve seen youth who were hesitant at first leave with glowing confidence in their faith and friendships that will last a lifetime."

As the conference drew to a close, the participants reflected on how much they had grown. Many left with a stronger sense of identity as disciples of Jesus Christ and a new network of friends to support them on their spiritual journeys.

"I’ve made so many friends here who share the same values," said Ryan Lau from Singapore. "This experience has strengthened my faith and reminded me that I’m never alone in my journey."

"I feel like FSY reminded me of how much we can support each other," shared Miguel Shathesh from Malaysia. "The gospel lessons and shared experiences brought us closer together, and I’m leaving with a stronger testimony and amazing friendships."

The impact extended to the counselors and leaders as well. "One of the most rewarding parts of FSY has been seeing the youth open up and share their inspiring stories,” said Emmy Lloyd, another counselor. “It’s amazing to witness them break out of their shells and connect with others in meaningful ways. These moments of connection and growth truly plant seeds of faith that will bless their lives for years to come."

"My favorite part is probably the youth," said Ty Miller, the FSY session coordinator. "I get to hear their stories and witness how this camp has been a place for answers to prayers and spiritual growth. Seeing them connect with the Savior and one another makes it all worthwhile."

Building Faith Beyond FSY

The 2024 FSY international conference was a landmark event that inspired youth and leaders alike. With its powerful theme, dedicated leaders, and unforgettable moments, it served as a reminder of the joy and strength found in living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

"I feel strongly their support for each other,” said Elder Tai. “I can see friendships being built and it’s great because often times they are alone and isolated with many living in the areas where they cannot communicate. It’s fun to see that they can mingle together and feel the Spirit and feel the love they have for each other.”

He continued, "I hope they will record and remember the feelings that they had this week, those feelings of love from God in their lives, and love and support from others who are like-minded with the same values. That will be a building block of their testimony that will help bless them for the rest of their lives."
