On Monday, November 19 at 7pm, a substantial crowd gathered at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Hong Kong Cultural Center. They weren’t audience for a performance in the Grand Theater, but they were artists, families, friends, Church and municipal leaders who converged to celebrate a festive launch for a gospel art exhibit “Light the World,” sponsored by the Hong Kong Island China Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
“We are so pleased to see the diligence put forth to organize such a quality exhibit,” said Anson Lam, the District Councillor for Wanchai, who came to support the opening ceremony. “This platform has provided an opportunity for many talented artists to outwardly express their beliefs and bring joy to others. This is a perfect way to kick-off the holiday season.”

This exhibit showcased artists’ interpretations of “lighting the world” which echoed with the Church’s Christmas Campaign theme. Participants were solicited through a call-for-entry invitation throughout the Church’s Hong Kong membership. Additional entries came from the U.S. and Cambodia.
The exhibit included oil paintings, Chinese ink paintings, sketch, photography, hand-made works, and information display boards. The boards introduced visitors to the Church and highlighted the Church’s volunteer efforts for Typhoon Manghut clean-up and support services.
“This art exhibit and display is yet another example of excellence demonstrated by our Church members in serving the greater community,” stated Wallace Lam, the Hong Kong Island China Stake President of the Church. “For nearly 70 years, our Church has provided emergency relief, humanitarian aid, and supported medical, educational and community projects in Hong Kong.”
The week-long exhibit drew hundreds of curious Cultural Center visitors to learn the different ways of lighting the world. For more information about the Church’s “Light the World” Christmas Campaign, please visit www.lds.org.hk.
